Wright County is located in central Minnesota, with its county seat in Buffalo. The Wright County District Court — part of Minnesota’s Tenth Judicial District — serves as the county’s sole trial court and maintains original jurisdiction over all criminal, civil, family, probate, juvenile, and traffic matters filed within the county. Court Administration, housed in the Wright County Justice Center, manages case processing, maintains official court records, collects fees and fines, and coordinates jury service. Whether someone needs to verify a criminal charge, pull a civil judgment, or locate a probate filing, Wright County offers several pathways to access these records.

Minnesota residents and members of the public can search for court records through official clerk offices, public access terminals at courthouses, and online tools maintained by the state judiciary. MinnesotaCourts.us provides a starting point for locating publicly available court case information across the state, including cases filed in Wright County. The Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) portal, accessible through the judicial branch website, is the primary electronic tool for researching district court cases statewide.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Wright County?

Wright County court records can be accessed online, in person at the Justice Center, or through written requests submitted by mail, fax, or email. The method a person chooses will depend on how quickly they need results and whether they require certified copies.

Online Search via MCRO

The Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) portal is the fastest way to locate Wright County court case information. MCRO offers four search functions:

  • Case Search — search by person name, business name, attorney name, case number, citation number, or attorney bar number
  • Document Search — retrieve public documents filed in a case using the case number
  • Hearing Search — look up scheduled hearings by party name, case number, or judicial officer
  • Judgment Search — search by debtor name for docketed money judgments and satisfaction details

MCRO displays criminal case information including defendant details, charges, events, and dispositions. Civil case results include party information, hearing schedules, dispositions, and financial data. Note that documents filed before July 1, 2015, may have limited availability online, and certain confidential case types are excluded from MCRO entirely.

Are Court Records Public in Wright County?

Minnesota law establishes a strong presumption of public access to court records. The Minnesota Government Data Practices Act (Minn. Stat. Chapter 13) requires government agencies to make public data available for inspection and copying. Court records specifically are governed by the Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch, which provide a detailed framework for determining what is and is not accessible to the public.

Under Rule 4 of the Rules of Public Access, the following categories of court records are not accessible to the public:

  • Domestic abuse records (under Minn. Stat. § 518B.01) until a court order is served on the respondent
  • Harassment restraining order records until the order is served
  • Court services records, including pre-sentence investigations, custody evaluations, and psychological evaluations
  • Judicial work product, notes, and draft memoranda
  • Juvenile appeal case records from non-public juvenile proceedings
  • Medical records in civil commitment cases and other cases filed under non-public cover sheets
  • Adoption records in their entirety
  • Wills deposited for safekeeping during the testator’s lifetime
  • Records sealed by court order, including certain expungement responses
  • Minor victim identifying information in sexual offense cases
  • Death certificates filed with the court (unless formally admitted into evidence)
  • Images containing sexual content or nudity
  • Pre-adjudication paternity proceedings filed before January 1, 2021

Restricted identifiers — including Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and driver’s license numbers — must be redacted from filings under Minn. Gen. R. Prac. 11. Confidential cases such as certain juvenile matters will not appear in public court calendars, and searching MCRO by a child’s name will not return juvenile protection results.

Third parties seeking access to sealed records must petition the court and obtain an order. The court weighs the petitioner’s need against the reasons the record was sealed, and even when access is granted, sensitive information may be redacted.
