Nicollet County, located in south-central Minnesota along the Minnesota River, has the city of St. Peter as its county seat. The county’s judicial system operates through a single District Court that handles the full range of legal proceedings — criminal prosecutions, civil disputes, family law matters, probate filings, juvenile cases, and traffic violations. Court records in Nicollet County document all of these proceedings and include pleadings, motions, exhibits, dockets, judgments, orders, case calendars, and other materials generated or received in connection with cases heard by the court.
Locating court records in Minnesota generally involves working through the District Court’s court administration office, using public access terminals at the courthouse, or navigating state-level online systems. MinnesotaCourts.us can be a useful starting point for identifying publicly available case information across Minnesota’s court system. Whether a search involves a recent criminal case, an older civil judgment, or a probate filing, knowing which access method applies to a particular record type will determine the most efficient approach.

Are Court Records Public in Nicollet County?
Minnesota court records are governed primarily by the Minnesota Rules of Public Access and the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act (Minn. Stat. Chapter 13). Under these rules, most district court records are presumptively public — meaning any person may inspect or copy them without demonstrating a particular need or purpose.
However, Minnesota law and court rules designate specific categories of records as confidential or non-public. Records withheld from general public access include:
- Juvenile delinquency and protection records under Minn. Stat. §§ 260B and 260C — accessible only to authorized parties directly involved in the proceedings
- Domestic abuse and harassment records — certain portions restricted under Minn. Stat. § 609.748
- Pre-sentence investigation reports — confidential per Minn. Stat. § 609.115 and not available for general inspection
- Medical and psychological reports submitted in court proceedings — subject to health privacy protections and court rules
- Judicial work products including draft orders and judge’s notes — excluded from public access under the judicial branch’s own data policies
- Identifying information about minor victims — protected regardless of whether the underlying case is otherwise public
- Sealed records — files sealed by court order cannot be accessed without a subsequent court order authorizing release
The MCRO online system automatically filters out confidential case types, so searches through that portal will only return results for publicly accessible matters.

Stat. § 299C. For a complete background check, the BCA’s Public Criminal History Search provides free public access to Minnesota criminal history records.
