Mower County is a southeastern Minnesota county anchored by its seat in Austin. Its court system operates under a single District Court with original jurisdiction over every category of case — civil, criminal, family, probate, juvenile, and traffic. Records generated in those proceedings are managed by Mower County Court Administration and are subject to Minnesota’s framework for public access to judicial branch records. Researching a case, verifying a judgment, or obtaining a certified copy of a court document each starts with understanding which office holds the record and what access method is appropriate.

For those beginning their search in Minnesota, MinnesotaCourts.us may help orient users toward publicly available case information, court contact directories, and self-help resources. Court records in Mower County can be searched online through the state’s electronic case portal, reviewed in person at the courthouse on public access terminals, or requested from Court Administration by phone or in writing. Each method has its own scope, and some records are only accessible through direct contact with the clerk’s office.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Mower County?

The primary tool for searching Mower County court records is the Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) system, operated by the Minnesota Judicial Branch. MCRO provides access to case records across all Minnesota district courts and is organized into four search functions:

  • Case Search — Find records by party name (individual, business, or attorney), case number, or citation number
  • Document Search — Search by case number to view public documents filed on or after July 1, 2015, per Rule 8, subd. 2 of the Minnesota Rules of Public Access
  • Hearing Search — Look up upcoming scheduled hearings by name, case number, judicial officer, or attorney
  • Judgment Search — Locate judgment details for civil and other monetary case dispositions

For records not available through MCRO, or for certified document copies, contact Mower County Court Administration directly:

Address: 201 2nd Avenue NE, Suite 3, Austin, MN 55912
Phone: (507) 509-7013
Fax: (507) 434-2702
Email: mowercourts@courts.state.mn.us
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Parties can also visit the courthouse in person to use public access terminals, which allow searching of cases statewide using the Minnesota Court Information System (MNCIS). Paper case files for older or locally stored matters may be reviewed at the counter during business hours. Traffic fines and court fees can be paid through the Minnesota Court Payment Center at (800) 657-3611 (or (651) 281-3219 from the metro area).

For criminal, juvenile delinquency, and juvenile protection case hearings, the court offers an optional eCheck-in service that lets parties pre-check in up to seven days before a scheduled hearing using their case file number or date of birth.

Are Court Records Public in Mower County?

Minnesota’s Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch establish the baseline framework for public access to court records. Under these rules, most case records filed in Mower County District Court are presumptively open to the public, subject to specific restrictions established by statute or court order.

Records and information that are not available for public inspection include:

  • Juvenile case records — proceedings involving minors in delinquency, protection, or termination of parental rights matters are confidential under Minnesota law
  • Adoption records — sealed by statute and accessible only through a court order
  • Personal identifiers — Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, driver’s license numbers, and passport numbers are redacted from publicly accessible documents
  • Medical and mental health records submitted as part of court proceedings
  • Sealed records — a court may restrict access to public case records in a particular case only upon findings required by law, court rule, or precedent under Rule 4 of the Minnesota Rules of Public Access
  • Records protected by federal law
  • Ongoing law enforcement investigative materials not yet filed with the court
  • Information identifying certain victims, including minors and victims in specific criminal proceedings

The MCRO system automatically filters out case types that are not remotely accessible under the Rules of Public Access. If a case does not appear in an MCRO search, it may be confidential — or it may simply be an older paper record not yet available electronically. Court Administration can clarify whether a particular file exists and whether it is subject to any restriction.

Mower County Criminal Court Records

The Mower County District Court handles all criminal matters within the county, from petty misdemeanors and traffic offenses to gross misdemeanors and felonies. Criminal case records include charging documents, complaint filings, indictments, plea records, sentencing orders, and probation terms. These records can be searched through MCRO for pending and disposed cases, or retrieved in certified form from Court Administration.

For criminal background check purposes — such as employment screening or licensing applications — MCRO is not a substitute for a formal criminal history check. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) operates the Minnesota Public Criminal History Search, a free public database that displays felony, gross misdemeanor, and certain misdemeanor conviction records. The BCA’s Criminal History System (CHS) contains records for individuals arrested for those offense levels and is the appropriate resource for verifying an individual’s statewide criminal history. More comprehensive or certified background checks can be requested directly from the BCA through its criminal justice information services division.

Arrest-related records — including booking date, arresting agency, charges, bond status, and release information — are maintained by law enforcement rather than the court. For Mower County arrest information, contact:
