Morrison County is a central Minnesota county anchored by Little Falls, the county seat, located along the Mississippi River roughly 120 miles northwest of Minneapolis. The Morrison County District Court, part of the Seventh Judicial District, handles the full spectrum of legal proceedings for the county’s residents, from felony criminal trials to family law disputes and estate matters. Court records from these proceedings are maintained by the Court Administrator’s office at the county courthouse and are largely available to the public under Minnesota’s open records framework.

Residents and researchers in Minnesota can search for publicly available court case information through official court resources, self-service terminals at the courthouse, clerk office requests, and online tools. MinnesotaCourts.us provides a starting point for locating publicly available court case information across the state. For Morrison County specifically, the Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO) portal serves as the primary digital access point for case records and documents filed in the District Court.

Are Court Records Public in Morrison County?

Minnesota law establishes a general presumption that court records are open to the public. The Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch and the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act (Minn. Stat. § 13.01 et seq.) together define what is accessible and what must remain restricted.

Records that are not accessible to the public include:

  • Juvenile case records — Proceedings involving minors are confidential, including juvenile delinquency matters and juvenile protection proceedings.
  • Adoption records — All adoption case records are sealed under Minn. R. Adopt. P. 7.
  • Domestic abuse and harassment records — Records maintained under the Domestic Abuse Act (Minn. Stat. § 518B.01) are not public until a court order is served on the respondent. Petitioner location information is kept confidential from the public even after that point.
  • Medical and psychological records — Records from medical, healthcare, or scientific professionals filed under protective designations are restricted, including civil commitment case records.
  • Court services records — Documents gathered to assist in sentencing, custody recommendations, or psychological evaluations of individuals are not publicly accessible.
  • Wills deposited for safekeeping during a testator’s lifetime — These are sealed until the testator’s death is confirmed.
  • Restricted identifiers — Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account details, and similar data are redacted from public documents under Minn. Stat. § 13.355 and related court rules.
  • Judicial work product and draft orders — Notes, memoranda, and draft decisions prepared by judges or court staff are not public.
  • Certain criminal investigation records — Active investigative materials and grand jury records are withheld from public access.
  • Records sealed by court order — Any record explicitly sealed by a judge is inaccessible to the public absent a court order or statutory exception.

Individuals who believe they are entitled to access a restricted or sealed record must petition the court and demonstrate they meet the statutory criteria for access.

Morrison County Criminal Court Records

The Morrison County District Court has original jurisdiction over all criminal matters filed in the county, ranging from misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors to felony charges. Criminal case records typically include charging documents, complaints, indictments, plea agreements, sentencing orders, probation conditions, and judgment entries.

Searching criminal case records:

The MCRO case search covers most Morrison County criminal cases and is the fastest way to find case status, hearing dates, and available documents. Note that MCRO should not be used as a substitute for an official criminal background check, as the platform does not provide a comprehensive criminal history.

For a statewide criminal history check, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) maintains the official Minnesota Public Criminal History database. Conviction data is public for 15 years following the completion of the sentence. The BCA’s online portal allows name-based searches and contact is available at (651) 793-2400. For more detailed background check options, visit the BCA’s background check page.

Arrest records and inmate information:

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office maintains arrest records and manages the county jail. Current inmates can be located through the Morrison County Jail inmate search portal, which is updated regularly and includes charges and booking information.

Morrison County Civil Court Records

The Morrison County District Court handles all civil litigation matters, including contract disputes, personal injury claims, landlord-tenant actions, small claims, and property disputes. Civil court files contain pleadings, motions, orders, judgments, and exhibits, most of which are accessible to the public unless sealed.

Small claims / Conciliation Court:

Minor civil disputes in Minnesota are resolved through Conciliation Court, often called small claims court. The monetary jurisdiction limit is $15,000 for most claims (and $4,000 for consumer credit transaction disputes). Self-represented filers can use Minnesota Guide & File to generate the required forms and, in some cases, file electronically. The district court’s Conciliation Court Virtual Assistant, accessible from the Morrison County District Court page, can provide guidance on filing a case.

Searching civil case records:

Use the MCRO portal to find civil case records by party name or case number. For cases filed before 2015 or documents not yet digitized, contact the Court Administrator at (320) 412-7010 or visit the courthouse.

Civil process service:

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Civil Unit handles service of legal documents including Orders for Protection, Harassment Restraining Orders, Mortgage Foreclosures, and Orders for Seizure. Inquiries about the status of civil process service can be directed to the Civil Unit by phone at (320) 632-9233 or by email at civilprocess@morrisoncountymn.gov.

Morrison County Family Court Records

Family law matters in Morrison County — including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, domestic abuse, and adoption — are heard in the Morrison County District Court. The Court Administrator’s office maintains these case files, though certain categories of family records carry access restrictions under Minnesota law.

Divorce records:

Final divorce decrees and related orders are part of the public court record and searchable through MCRO. These documents are commonly needed for name changes, property title transfers, or remarriage applications. Certified copies cost $14 per document and must be requested from the Court Administrator.

Domestic abuse and protective orders:

Records of domestic abuse proceedings under the Domestic Abuse Act (Minn. Stat. § 518B.01) are restricted until a court order is served on the respondent. After service, the order itself becomes public, but the petitioner’s location and residence information remains confidential. Orders for Protection and Harassment Restraining Orders are served through the Morrison County Sheriff’s Civil Unit.

Adoption records:

All adoption case records are sealed under Minnesota adoption procedure rules. Access requires a court order or compliance with specific statutory provisions governing adoptee rights.

Marriage certificates:

Marriage certificates are issued by and obtained from the Morrison County Recorder’s Office, not the court. Records are available for marriages occurring in the county from 1870 to the present.

  • Address: 213 1st Avenue SE, Little Falls, MN 56345
  • Phone: (320) 632-0146

Birth and death records:

Vital records are maintained by the Morrison County Recorder’s Office, not the District Court. Certified copies of birth and death certificates can be requested in person, by mail (with a notarized application), or by email (with a notarized application and phone payment).

Record TypeFirst Certified CopyEach Additional Copy
Birth certificate$26.00$19.00
Death certificate$13.00$6.00

Birth records from 1870 to present, and death records for Morrison County events, are available at the Recorder’s Office. The birth certificate application is available for download from the county website. Access to birth records is limited to individuals who can demonstrate a tangible interest in the record.

Morrison County Probate Court Records

Minnesota does not have a separate probate court. In Morrison County, all probate and estate matters are heard by the District Court, with case files maintained by the Court Administrator. The MCRO portal includes public documents from formal probate, guardianship, conservatorship, and trust case types, making it possible to search these records remotely.

Matters handled in probate proceedings:

  • Estate administration (testate and intestate)
  • Will probate and will contests
  • Appointment of personal representatives
  • Guardianships and conservatorships for minors and incapacitated adults
  • Trust administration
  • Mental health commitment proceedings

Searching probate records:

Most probate cases are searchable on MCRO by the decedent’s name or case number. Public documents within formal probate and guardianship/conservatorship files are included in the system, though certain records within those cases — such as medical records filed under seal or psychological evaluations — remain restricted. For older estate records not available electronically, contact the Court Administrator at (320) 412-7010 or visit the courthouse during office hours.

Note on wills deposited for safekeeping: Under Minnesota Statutes, section 524.2-515, a will deposited with the court during the testator’s lifetime is sealed and inaccessible to the public. Only upon proof of the testator’s death may the existence of the will be disclosed and the document released to the appropriate parties. Access during the testator’s lifetime is limited to the testator, their attorney or agent, or a court-appointed guardian or conservator.

For legal assistance with probate matters, the Morrison County District Court Self-Help Center and the Minnesota Judicial Branch Find a Lawyer resource can help individuals locate appropriate legal services. Court forms for probate, guardianship, conservatorship, and related proceedings are available through the Minnesota Judicial Branch forms page.
