Beltrami County is located in northwestern Minnesota, with Bemidji serving as the county seat. The county’s legal proceedings are administered through a single District Court that holds original jurisdiction over all case types — criminal, civil, family, probate, juvenile, and traffic. Knowing which office maintains the records you need, and how to properly request them, saves considerable time and avoids unnecessary trips to the courthouse.

Residents and researchers looking for Minnesota court records can begin their search at MinnesotaCourts.us, the official hub for the state’s judicial system. The site connects users to case search tools, court locations, filing fee schedules, downloadable forms, and self-help resources across all 87 counties. Public case information for Beltrami County is accessible through both this statewide portal and in person at the Judicial Center in Bemidji.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Beltrami County?

Three primary methods exist for searching Beltrami County court records: the state’s online case search system, public access terminals at the courthouse, and written requests submitted in person or by mail.

Online: Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO)

The Minnesota Court Records Online Case Search is the primary public tool for locating district court records statewide. It covers all Beltrami County District Court case data and allows searches by:

  • Individual or business name
  • Attorney name or bar number
  • Case number
  • Citation number

MCRO returns case summaries, scheduled hearing dates, and monetary judgment records. Document images are generally available for cases electronically filed after July 1, 2015. Some case types — detailed in the public access section below — do not appear in search results due to confidentiality requirements. For hearing schedules specifically, the court posts a publicly searchable Beltrami County weekly court calendar in PDF format each business day at 7:00 a.m., updated hourly. This calendar excludes confidential matters and cases not remotely accessible under the Minnesota Rules of Public Access.

In Person: Public Access Terminals

The Beltrami County Judicial Center has public access terminals where any visitor may conduct case searches independently during business hours. Court staff are available to direct you to the correct file or terminal.

Are Court Records Public in Beltrami County?

Minnesota courts operate under a default presumption that case records are public. The Minnesota Rules of Public Access to Records of the Judicial Branch define both the scope of access rights and the categories of records that are restricted. Most civil, criminal, family, and probate filings at the Beltrami County District Court are open to inspection and copying by any member of the public.

Records that are restricted or excluded from public access include:

  • Juvenile delinquency matters involving individuals aged 16 or older at the time of a felony offense
  • Adoption proceedings — sealed by default under Minnesota law
  • Civil commitment and mental health cases
  • Child in Need of Protection or Services (CHIPS) filings
  • Order for Protection petitions filed by the petitioner
  • Victim identifying information in applicable criminal proceedings
  • Records sealed by specific court order based on extraordinary privacy interests or statutory mandate

The Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, Minn. Stat. Chapter 13, governs what data held by government agencies — including law enforcement records maintained by the Sheriff’s Office — may be shared with the public. When there is uncertainty about whether a specific file is accessible, the District Court clerk can clarify before a formal request is submitted. Fee waivers are available for individuals who cannot afford filing or copy fees; ask the clerk’s office for the application.
